RVtravel.com correspondent Sandy Burns talks with Bruce Alexander of Riverside RVs about its Whitewater retro travel trailer, which was inspired by the Scotty "canned ham" trailers built between 1957 and 1997. The 2015 retro trailer is lightweight with a single axle and can be pulled by a six-cylinder vehicle.
The trailers are popular with RVers who are downsizing and want something they can pull with their six-cylinder car. Sandy also talks with RV historian Al Hesselbart, who discusses the original Scotty trailers, which were commonly referred to as "Serro Scottys" — a reference to the company founder John Serro. Among the unique features of the original Scotty was a dropped down floor in the kitchen so a meal could be prepared while standing up.
